What do I do if a device is listed with a red X in Windows Device Manager Dell Laptop


A red X next to a device in Windows Device Manager indicates that the device is either disabled or Microsoft Windows is unable to communicate with the device due to a corrupt or deleted driver file.

To resolve this issue:

  • Press the Windows logo key + R key on the keyboard.
  • In the run dialog box, type devmgmt.msc and press the Enter key.
  • Right-click on the device that has the problem and click Properties.
  • Click the Device Usage drop-down and select Use this device (enabled). If this option is already selected, move to the next step.

  • In the Properties window, click the Driver tab and click Uninstall.
  • In the Confirm Device Uninstall window, check the box Delete the driver software for this device (if available).
  • Click OK to confirm and proceed with uninstallation.
  • Once the uninstallation is complete, reboot the PC.
Once the PC has rebooted, Microsoft Windows will automatically detect and attempt to reinstall the device driver. If the red X still remains after the reboot, depending on the device, download and install the device driver from Dell Drivers & Downloads website or the device manufacturer's website.
